If you are staying at places along the line, why not have a longer day out and visit some of the natural and historic and destinations a bit further afield? The Lakes Line has train services going directly to the historic city of Lancaster and on to Preston and Manchester. Connections can also be made at Oxenholme to trains running northwards to Penrith, the historic city of Carlisle, and on to Edinburgh, Glasgow and south western Scotland. At Carlisle you can also make connections to the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway or travel along the Tyne Valley route towards Newcastle upon Tyne and close to Hadrian’s Wall, now a World Heritage Site. If you prefer the stunning coastal scenery, there is no better route than doing a circular tour by rail along the Furness Line to Barrow and alongside the sea on the Cumbrian Coast line to Carlisle. The round trip can include Lancaster, Barrow in Furness, Ravenglass for a connection to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (also known as "The Ratty"), Whitehaven, Maryport and Carlisle, and then down the main line to Penrith, with its castle beside the station, and through the Lune Gorge  before returning to the Lakes Line at Oxenholme. You could spend a day along the very scenic Furness Line around the shores of Morecambe Bay, which also has international wildlife designations, and along the Cumbrian Coast Line with its historic centres like Ravenglass, Whitehaven and Maryport. Along the Furness Line you could stop off for a cup of tea in the famous Brief Encounter station refreshment room at Carnforth or enjoy the Victorian elegance of Grange over Sands or Ulverston.

Have a look at the Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express websites for their Days Out tickets and special offers. Take advantage of the Day Ranger tickets and Duo tickets. Alternatively, pop in to Windermere or Oxenholme station booking offices and talk to the friendly staff. Stay a bit longer and get to know the Lakes Line and Cumbria a bit better.
